The Minarets of Ghazni

Two 12th-century brick minarets built by the Ghaznavid sultans Masud III and Bahram Shah, standing about 600 metres apart on the plain north-east of the city.

The tomb of Sultan Mahmud

In the village of Rawza, the tomb of Mahmud of Ghazni, who died in 1030 and was the empire's greatest ruler, with a carved marble gravestone.

Ghazni Citadel

What is the history and culture of Ghazni?

Ghazni was the capital of the Ghaznavid empire from 977 until 1186. Under Sultan Mahmud, who ruled from 998 to 1030, it governed lands from Iran to northern India, and its court drew the scholar al-Biruni and, by tradition, the poet Ferdowsi, who presented the Shahnameh to Mahmud.

In 1151 the Ghurid ruler Ala al-Din Husayn burned the city, earning the name Jahan-suz, the "World Burner". Ghazni recovered, and its minarets, tombs and citadel remain. It is known for its embroidered sheepskin coats, the postin, and in 2013 it was named a capital of Islamic culture.
