What is a Helmand tour like?

Short answer

Helmand, in the south-west, is known for the 11th-century arch of Qala-e Bost and the Ghaznavid palace ruins of Lashkari Bazar near Lashkar Gah. Al Hamid Tour and Travel's Lashkar Gah & Qala-e Bost takes 3 days and costs $450 to $660 per person, with an English-speaking guide, private transport and hotels with breakfast. The best season is October to April.

Helmand, in the south-west, takes its name from Afghanistan's longest river. Its capital, Lashkar Gah, stands where the Helmand and Arghandab rivers meet, about 138 km by road west of Kandahar. A short drive south is Qala-e Bost, an 11th-century arch about 25 metres high, the one that has appeared on Afghan banknotes; just north of the town are the mud-brick ruins of Lashkari Bazar, a palace city of the Ghaznavid sultans in the 11th century. Summers here are very hot, so we run Helmand trips from October to April.

Lashkari Bazar

The ruins of three Ghaznavid palaces built over the cliffs along the Helmand River, a winter residence of Mahmud of Ghazni and his son Masud. French archaeologists excavated them in 1949–51.

The Helmand River

Afghanistan's longest river, about 1,150 km, which waters the farmland of the south-west.

Lashkar Gah

What is the history and culture of Helmand?

Bost was a great city of the Ghaznavid empire and its winter capital in the 11th century, when the palaces of Lashkari Bazar were built along the river. The Ghurids burned it in the 1150s, and it never recovered after the Mongol invasions of the 13th century.

In the 1950s and 1960s the Helmand Valley Authority, with American help, built dams and canals to irrigate the desert, and Lashkar Gah was rebuilt as its headquarters. Helmand is a Pashtun province of farmers, known for its wheat, cotton and melons.
