What do you see on a Herat tour?

On a Herat tour you see the Great Mosque, Herat Citadel, the Musalla minarets, Gazar Gah, the old bazaars and the tomb of Jami. Each is described below.

The Great Mosque

Begun in 1200 by the Ghurid sultan Ghiyath al-Din, who is buried there, and covered in blue, white and turquoise tiles. Its own workshop still makes the tiles used to repair it.

Herat Citadel

The fortress above the old city, which local tradition links to Alexander the Great. Rebuilt many times, it was restored between 2006 and 2011 and now houses two museums.

The Musalla minarets

What remains of the great complex Queen Gawhar Shad began in 1417: five leaning minarets and the ribbed dome of her mausoleum. Most of the complex was demolished in 1885.

Gazar Gah

The shrine of the Sufi poet Khwaja Abdullah Ansari, who died in 1088, rebuilt in 1425 for the Timurid ruler Shah Rukh, with a 30-metre tiled entrance and a quiet garden.

The old bazaars

Covered bazaars around the Chahar Su crossroads, where Herat's blue glass, silk and carpets are still made and sold.

The tomb of Jami

The grave of Abd al-Rahman Jami (1414–1492), one of the last great classical poets of Persian.

What is the history and culture of Herat?

Herat stands in a fertile valley on the Hari River and has been a city for more than 2,500 years; Alexander the Great passed through in 330 BC. It was sacked by Genghis Khan in 1221 and rebuilt, and in the 15th century, under Shah Rukh and his wife Gawhar Shad, it was the capital of the Timurid empire and one of the most cultured cities in the world.

The painter Behzad, the poet Jami and the writer Ali-Shir Nava'i all worked here, and the miniatures, tilework and buildings of that time shaped art from Persia to Mughal India. Herat is still known for its crafts (blue glass, silk, carpets and tiles), for its gardens, and for a Persian that Afghans consider especially fine.
