What do you see on a Nangarhar tour?

On a Nangarhar tour you see Jalalabad's gardens, the tomb of King Amanullah Khan, the Kabul River and Darunta, Hadda, the road from Kabul and Spin Ghar. Each is described below.

Jalalabad's gardens

The city of gardens: orange trees, palms and flower gardens that make Jalalabad Afghanistan's favourite winter escape.

The tomb of King Amanullah Khan

The tomb of the king who won Afghanistan's independence in 1919, buried in Jalalabad in 1960 beside his father, Habibullah Khan.

The Kabul River and Darunta

The Kabul River runs through the farmland around the city; just west of Jalalabad it is held back by the Darunta dam, built in the 1960s.

Hadda

Ten kilometres south of the city, Hadda was one of the great centres of Gandharan Buddhist art, with hundreds of stupas and fine stucco figures. Little survived the wars.

The road from Kabul

The drive down from Kabul through the gorges of Tang-e Gharu and Sarobi, from the cold highlands to the warm plain.

Spin Ghar

The "White Mountains" along the border, snow-capped for much of the year and seen from all over the plain.

What is the history and culture of Nangarhar?

The Nangarhar plain has always been on the main road between Kabul and India, through the Khyber Pass. From the 1st century it was part of Gandhara, and Hadda's monasteries were filled with Greco-Buddhist stucco art. Jalalabad itself was laid out around 1570 and named after the Mughal emperor Akbar, whose full name was Jalal ad-Din.

Afghan kings spent their winters in Jalalabad, away from the snow of Kabul, and King Amanullah Khan, who won independence in 1919, is buried here. Nangarhar is a Pashtun province, known for its oranges, sugar cane and rice, and for its mild winters.
