What do you see on a Nuristan tour?

On a Nuristan tour you see the cedar forests, the timber villages, Nuristani wood carving, the rivers and waterfalls and Parun. Each is described below.

The cedar forests

Forests of deodar cedar, oak and pine on the mountain slopes, among the largest left in Afghanistan.

The timber villages

Villages of wooden houses stacked up the hillsides, so that the roof of one house is the terrace of the next.

Nuristani wood carving

Carved wooden pillars, doors and chairs with geometric patterns, the craft Nuristan is famous for.

The rivers and waterfalls

Clear, fast rivers in deep valleys, fed by the snow of the Hindu Kush.

Parun

The provincial capital, in the high Parun valley.

What is the history and culture of Nuristan?

For centuries Nuristan's people kept their own religion and customs in valleys that outsiders rarely reached, and the region was called Kafiristan. In 1895–96 Amir Abdur Rahman Khan conquered it and converted its people to Islam, and renamed it Nuristan, the "Land of Light".

Nuristanis speak languages of their own, such as Kati, Waigali, Ashkun and Prasun, which form a separate branch of the Indo-Iranian family. They are known for their timber houses and wood carving, and for the hospitality they show guests who make the long journey.
