What do you see on a Panjshir tour?

On a Panjshir tour you see the Panjshir River, the orchards and villages, the emerald mines, the Anjuman Pass and the old tanks. Each is described below.

The Panjshir River

The emerald river that runs the length of the valley, fed by the snows of the Hindu Kush.

The orchards and villages

Mulberry and apricot orchards and stone villages on terraces above the river.

The emerald mines

Panjshir is known for its emeralds, mined high in the side valleys and sold in Kabul.

The Anjuman Pass

At the head of the valley, the pass of about 4,400 metres that leads over the Hindu Kush to Badakhshan.

The old tanks

Rusting Soviet tanks and armoured vehicles left along the road since the 1980s.

What is the history and culture of Panjshir?

The name Panjshir means "five lions". In the 9th and 10th centuries the silver mines of the upper valley were among the richest in the Islamic world, and the Tajik villages of the valley have farmed its terraces and orchards for centuries.

Its narrow entrance gorge made Panjshir a natural fortress: in the 1980s Soviet forces sent nine major offensives against it without holding it. Today it is one of Afghanistan's most beautiful valleys, known for its emeralds, its mulberries and its clear river.
