Afghanistan Visa for Tourists: How to Get One, Step by Step

Getting an Afghan tourist visa is more straightforward than most travelers expect — but the rules vary by embassy and nationality, and the paperwork goes much smoother when a registered local operator prepares it with you. Here is the process we walk every guest through.

The process in five steps

1. Book your tour (or at least your itinerary) with a registered Afghan tour operator — embassies want to see who is hosting you.
2. Receive your invitation/support letter from the operator — we prepare this for every guest, usually within a couple of working days.
3. Apply at the Afghan embassy or consulate you chose, with your passport, photos, application form, and the letter.
4. Pay the visa fee at the embassy and wait for processing — typically a few working days up to two weeks.
5. Collect your passport with the visa, send us a copy, and we finalize your arrival plan.

Documents most embassies ask for

• Passport valid at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, with blank pages
• Completed visa application form (from the embassy or its website)
• Passport-size photos (usually 2)
• Invitation or support letter from a registered Afghan tour operator — we provide this
• Your tour itinerary and, at some embassies, proof of accommodation — also covered by our letter

Where travelers usually apply

You apply at an Afghan embassy or consulate outside Afghanistan. Travelers most often use the missions in Dubai or Abu Dhabi (UAE), Islamabad or Peshawar (Pakistan), Doha (Qatar), Istanbul (Türkiye), or Tashkent (Uzbekistan) — but many capitals have an Afghan mission. Requirements and fees differ from one embassy to another, so once you tell us where you will apply, we tailor the paperwork to that embassy's checklist.

Cost and processing time

Expect roughly $80–$200 for a single-entry tourist visa depending on your nationality and the embassy, with a stay of around 30 days. Processing commonly takes from a few working days up to two weeks, so apply at least three to four weeks before your trip. The visa fee is paid directly to the embassy and is not included in tour packages.
