Nuristan & Badakhshan: Afghanistan's Remote Northeast

For travelers who want Afghanistan at its wildest and most remote, the northeast is unforgettable. Nuristan's forested mountains and Badakhshan's high valleys — reaching all the way to the Wakhan Corridor and the Pamirs — are among the most spectacular and least-visited places in the country. Nuristan

Nuristan, east of Kabul, is a rugged province of steep forested valleys, timber villages that cling to the mountainsides, and a distinct culture and history. It is remote and hard to reach, with rough roads and simple facilities, which is exactly what gives it its untouched character. Travel here needs time, flexibility, and an experienced local team — which is where we come in.

Badakhshan and the Wakhan

Badakhshan, in the far northeast, is famous for its dramatic high-mountain scenery and for the Wakhan Corridor — the thin finger of land reaching between Tajikistan, Pakistan, and China toward the Pamirs. The Wakhan is one of Afghanistan's safest and most breathtaking trekking regions, home to Wakhi farmers and, higher up, Kyrgyz herders. Expect big landscapes, clear rivers, and warm hospitality far from any crowd.

Getting there and planning

These are the most logistically demanding trips we run. Badakhshan is usually reached by a domestic flight to Faizabad followed by long drives, then trekking in the Wakhan; Nuristan is reached overland on rough roads. Both need permits, careful timing, and enough days to travel at the region's own pace. We handle the flights, vehicles, guides, permits, and support so you can focus on the experience.

Best time to visit

Summer — roughly June to September — is the season for the high northeast, when the passes are open and the weather is at its best. Outside those months, snow closes much of the region. Because these journeys are remote and demand is limited, we plan them well in advance to secure logistics and the right local team.

Practical tips

• Allow plenty of time — distances are long and travel is slow; these trips can't be rushed.
• Pack for real mountains: warm layers, sturdy boots, and sun protection at altitude.
• Facilities are basic — expect simple guesthouses and homestays, and carry cash.
