Just a few hours north of Kabul, the Panjshir Valley opens up like a ribbon of green between towering mountains — fields, orchards, and an emerald river running through it all. It is one of the easiest and most rewarding escapes from the capital, and a favorite day trip for our guests. Here is what to see and how to plan it.

Getting to Panjshir

Panjshir is an easy trip from Kabul — roughly three hours each way by private vehicle, heading north past Charikar and into the valley. It makes a comfortable full-day excursion, or a relaxed overnight if you want to go deeper into the valley. Best time to visit

Late spring through autumn is the ideal window, when the valley is lush and green and the weather is mild. Summer is pleasant at this altitude, cooler than Kabul's midday heat. Winter brings cold and snow to the higher ground, so we usually plan Panjshir for the warmer half of the year.

Practical tips

• Bring a light jacket — the valley is cooler than Kabul, especially by the river.
• Start early to make the most of the day and the morning light.
• Ask your guide before photographing people or sensitive sites.
• Carry water and some cash; facilities in the valley are simple.
